TO WITNESS SITUATIONS WHERE GOD HAS TRULY ORCHESTRATED EVENTS AND TRANSFORMED PAINFUL TRIALS INTO GLORIOUS TRIUMPHS IS AMAZING TO BEHOLD.
Out of loss, compassion, and a deep desire to help other families, Larissa Linton and Jenny Dowen founded Heroes for Children. These remarkable women both lost their beautiful young daughters to Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Larissa’s daughter Taylor was just 4 years old and Jenny’s daughter Allie, just 8 months old.
I have seen these women live out the verse - "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13
On November 26, 2001, Taylor passed away after enduring 11 months of cancer treatment. Three years later, Allie was in the same hospital, in the same room, with the same doctors, enduring the same devastating trials. During Allie’s battle with cancer, Jenny kept a blog that was followed by thousands and thousands of people. One of her devout readers was Larissa. After Allie’s death on September 13, 2004, Larissa reached out to Jenny and soon these two women, connected by loss, developed an endearing friendship.
BIRTH OF HEROES FOR CHILDREN
Larissa and Jenny recounted not only the devastating effects of childhood cancer but also the tremendous support they received from the community. During their time spending days and days in the hospital, they each witnessed many families struggling without the aid or care from others. Families were having difficulty paying for everyday necessities, or electrical bills, or making house payments. In 2002, Larissa had started a non-profit organization called Taylor’s Angels in Taylor’s memory to provide financial assistance to families with children battling cancer. After Larissa and Jenny met they knew it was their calling to use their individual and unique talents and passions together to serve families in need. They made it their vision: NO family in Texas with a child battling cancer would fight alone. In 2004, honoring their girls’ memories, Heroes for Children was born.
HEROES FOR CHILDREN TRULY HELPS OTHERS
For 11 years, Heroes for Children has advocated for and provided financial and social assistance to families with children (0-22 yrs of age) battling cancer. They help alleviate families' worries, giving them comfort, and a brief respite from the everyday challenges. With the help of donors, sponsors and volunteers, they have:
· Fulfilled more than 5,500 financial assistance requests
· Donated over $5.5 million in program services
· Donated more than 625 laptops to teens undergoing treatment
· Assisted more than 4,500 Texas families
The average financial assistance grant is $750 and assists with necessary expenses such as mortgage/rent, utilities, car payments, or even funerals for children who have lost their battle to cancer. Each family faces unique needs. On average, $40,000 is provided each month in direct financial assistance. Heroes for Children is giving hope.
"Heroes for Children helps families financially. It is wonderful to see the relief in families’ eyes when they know their rent, car, etc. will be paid for that month. They breathe just a little easier for that moment. The families then begin to think about ways they can give back to others even if they have no money themselves." --social worker at Scott & White Hospital in Temple

HEROES & HANDBAGS
April 8th 2016 in Dallas & April 21st 2016 in Houston - Heroes and Handbags
This event is hands-down one of the chicest events in town and also one of the easiest at which to pull out your handbag and spend for a cause. Two extremely generous women, Allison Doherty and Cameron Smith, started this event ten years ago. Allison, deeply moved by Jenny’s blog, wanted to share Jenny’s heart wrenching story with her friends. She asked her dear friend Cameron Smith if she would open her beautiful backyard garden for a luncheon so others could her the story of Jenny’s journey. Allison soon learned that Cameron also was extremely moved by Jenny’s blog and Cameron jumped at the chance. From that little luncheon, God has orchestrated talented women to walk beside Larissa and Jenny each year to chair this event and expand it to an event with hundreds of donors in two cities and helps thousands of families each year.
